Engineering Design I

About Instructor

Course Description

The Engineering Design I course teaches the basics of introductory computer aided design including the creation of geometric forms, interpreting 2D and 3D drawings of objects, and editing isometric and perspective drawings in a 3D CAD environment. Students create a diverse portfolio of projects while learning to translate abstract concepts into functional designs. Projects include orthographic projections of 3D objects, isometric drawings, and 3D walkthroughs. Students produce drawings to meet design specifications, create oblique and perspective CAD drawings, and edit drawings in a 3D CAD environment.

In addition to the minimum technical specifications found at http://www.edgenuity.com/Support/System-Requirements, this course requires a Windows-based computer. Additional software used in the program is CAD Standard Lite® which is provided upon course enrollment.

Topics of Study

  • Plotting shapes using coordinates
  • Three-view orthographic drawings
  • Sectional and auxiliary views
  • Isometric and perspective drawings
  • Dimensioning
  • Working drawings
  • Creating 3D objects in CAD

Course Features

  • The course provides step-by-step instruction on how to use CAD Standard Lite and Google SketchUp™, two innovative CAD software programs.
  • In many project-based assignments, students will use CAD Standard Lite to create three-view orthographic drawings of objects and designs.
  • In a dimensioning assignment, students will produce a set of professional-grade working drawings.
  • In the final assignment of the course, students will use Google SketchUp to produce a three-dimensional design and then do a walkthrough of the design from the perspective of a human at the same scale as the design.
  • Interviews with professionals in the field provide a career-related context for students’ knowledge.
  • This course includes many course graphics, animated images, and interactive exercises that enhance students’ understanding.
  • Each section of the course includes one or more project-based assignments that have students apply what they learned.
