Course Description

Sophia’s Public Speaking course uses problem­-based learning that shows you how to apply your knowledge in real­-world situations. Our Many Ways™ learning model features a range of instructional materials to support your individual learning preference. This rich, immersive experience helps you better understand and retain information, for an all­-around smarter way to learn.

Course Objectives

In this course, you will complete a series of assessments comprised of 12 Challenge assessments, 4 Milestone assessments, and 4 Touchstone assessments tied to the following learning outcomes:

  • Articulate the responsibilities of ethical communication.
  • Examine the history of public speaking and rhetoric.
  • Analyze best practices in effective public speaking.
  • Evaluate speech topics, considering focus and audience appropriateness.
  • Generate a speech outline.
  • Generate a topic, thesis, and main ideas for a speech.
  • Write effective introductions, conclusions, and transitions for speeches.
  • Conduct research to identify support for a speech topic, evaluating source credibility.
  • Effectively utilize supporting evidence in a speech.
  • Identify characteristics of informative, persuasive, and special occasion speeches.
  • Prepare speeches on a variety of topics with a range of purposes.
  • Differentiate between ethos, pathos, and logos.
  • Employ language that is inclusive, accurate, and audience appropriate.
  • Analyze the importance of tone, pronunciation, and articulation.
  • Identify the impact of nonverbal communication on public speaking.
  • Develop audience awareness and perform audience analysis.
  • Apply techniques for rehearsing a speech.
  • Effectively incorporate visual aids.
  • Identify techniques for reducing anxiety and building confidence.
  • Develop listening skills.

Course Dates

All courses are offered on a rolling enrollment basis. You choose your own start date and have 60 days to complete each course. However, because the courses are self-paced, you can complete them in fewer than 60 days.
